A multimetric-index approach using fisheries data to assess fish assemblage structure in relation to salinity gradient in a tropical West African estuary ArchiMer
Kantoussan, J.; Ecoutin, J. M.; Lae, R.; Thiaw, O. T.; Tito De Morais, L..
This study examines the effects of increasing salinity on fish assemblage structure in the Casamance Estuary, Senegal. using a series of indices. The study data were derived from commercial fishery surveys conducted between April and July 2005. Analysis of within-trophic-group diversity in the Casamance Estuary shows a significant drop in the diversity of apex predators in the upper. more saline reaches of the estuary. By contrast. primary consumers adapted well to salinity changes and exhibited higher taxonomic diversity in the upper reaches of the estuary than in the lower reaches. The findings also indicate decreases in average sizes of the landed species and the trophic levels among fish catches in the direction of the upper reaches. However, the catch...

Biochemical effect of aquatic environmental pollution on the fishermen health OceanDocs
Saad, A.A.; El-Sekeily, A.M.; Moafy, N.M.; Youssef, A.I..
This study is an attempt to describe a human health risk assessment as a function of recreationl activities in relation to environmental pollution of El-Mex bay through studying the Haemoglobin-adducts (Hb-adducts) of three aromatic amines namely benzidine, alpha and beta naphthylamine as biomarker for exposure as well as biochemical effects of these pollutants on fishermen in this area, beside the determination of these substances in the tissues of 2 types of fish at the same area. The sturdy was conducted on 21 control male subjects and 78 volunteers fishermen, all the 99 subjects were chosen to be smokers. Blood glutathione content was significantly decreased in fislrermen compared with controls. On the other hand glutathione-S-transferase,...

Diversity and Efficiency of Rhizobia Communities from Iron Mining Areas Using Cowpea as a Trap Plant Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Castro,Jordana Luísa de; Souza,Mariana Gonçalves; Rufini,Márcia; Guimarães,Amanda Azarias; Rodrigues,Tainara Louzada; Moreira,Fatima Maria de Souza.
ABSTRACT Mining is an important economic activity. However, its impact on environment must be accessed, mainly on relevant processes for their sustainability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diversity and efficiency of symbiotic nitrogen fixing bacterial communities in soils under different types of vegetation in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero: ironstone outcrops, Atlantic Forest, neotropical savanna, and a rehabilitated area revegetated with grass. Suspensions of soil samples collected under each type of vegetation were made in a saline solution to capture rhizobia communities that were then inoculated on cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.], which was used as a trap plant. The symbiotic efficiency of the communities was evaluated in a...

Microbiological Indicators of Soil Quality Under Native Forests are Influenced by Topographic Factors Anais da ABC (AABC)
TEIXEIRA,ANITA F.S.; SILVA,JACQUELINE S.; VILELA,LAÍZE A.F.; COSTA,PATRÍCIA F.; COSTA,ELAINE M. DA; GUIMARÃES,AMANDA A.; SANTOS,JESSÉ V. DOS; SILVA,SÉRGIO H.G.; CARNEIRO,MARCO AURÉLIO C.; MOREIRA,FATIMA M.S..
Abstract: Several microbiological indicators of soil quality present high sensitivity, but little is known about the influence of topographic factors on them. This work aimed to evaluate variability of biological indicators of soil quality across a hillslope under native forest and the influence of topographic factors on them. Four positions on a hillslope were evaluated. Activity of the enzymes β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase, urease and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis were determined, as well as basal and substrate-induced respiration, and density of microorganisms: total bacteria, total fungi, actinobacteria, phosphate solubilizers, ammonifiers, native rhizobia, free-living N2-fixing bacteria, spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and percentage...

Notes on nine biological indicators estimable from trawl surveys with an illustrative assessment for North Sea cod ArchiMer
Cotter, John; Mesnil, Benoit; Witthames, Peter; Parker-humphreys, Matt.
This paper reviews a selection of nine indicators for assessing the biological state of a fish population monitored only by using trawl surveys in which catchability is assumed constant from time to time and place to place. The intention is to inform or remind of the range of possibilities and of associated practical and statistical issues. The indicators, grouped according to relationships with abundance, length, age, weight, and reproduction, are documented in a standard format covering estimation, interpretability, sensitivity, considerations for reference points where possible, and an example of their application. Lastly, selected indicators together with year-class curves fitted to abundance indices-at-age are applied to the North Sea cod to...

Soil fauna as an indicator of soil quality in forest stands, pasture and secondary forest Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Cunha Neto,Felipe Vieira da; Correia,Maria Elizabeth Fernandes; Pereira,Guilherme Henrique Almeida; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Leles,Paulo Sérgio dos Santos.
The interactions between soil invertebrates and environmental variations are relatively unknown in the assessment of soil quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate soil quality in areas with different soil management systems, based on soil fauna as indicator, in Além Paraíba, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The soil invertebrate community was sampled using pitfall traps, in the dry and rainy seasons, from areas with five vegetation types (acacia, mimosa, eucalyptus, pasture, and secondary forest). The abundance of organisms and the total and average richness, Shannon's diversity index, the Pielou uniformity index, and change index V were determined. The fauna was most abundant in the areas of secondary forest and mimosa plantations in the dry season...

Utilisation d’espèces halieutiques exploitées comme indicateurs de la contamination chimique en zone littorale ArchiMer
Abarnou, Alain.
The concept of biological indicator relies upon the assumption that the contamination measured in biological tissues reflects that of the aquatic environment. This study aims to update the knowledge on contamination levels of various chemical contaminants in a few exploited fish species from various areas along the French coastline. The objective of the work is to evaluate the possibility of differentiating the various coastal zones according to the contamination levels measured in fish living there. Several groups of contaminants were followed: PCBs (marker PCBs and dioxin-like PCBs), dioxins (PCCDs and PCDFs), PBDEs, PFCs and total mercury). These contaminants were mainly measured in four fish species: the sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), the mackerel...

Worker morphology of the ant Gnamptogenys striatula Mayr (Formicidae, Ectatomminae) in different landscapes from the Atlantic Forest domain Rev. Bras. entomol.
Oliveira,Roseli F.; Silva,Rogério R.; Souza-Campana,Débora R.; Nakano,Márcia A.; Morini,Maria Santina C..
Morphological traits, such as size and shape, may reflect a combination of ecological and evolutionary responses by organisms. Ants have been used to evaluate the relationship between the environment and species coexistence and morphology. In the present study, we analyzed the morphology of workers of Gnamptogenys striatula Mayr in different landscapes from the Atlantic Domain in southeastern Brazil, focusing on the variation in the morphological attributes of these populations compared to those from a dense ombrophilous forest. Eighteen morphological traits of functional importance for interactions between workers and the environment were measured to characterize the size and shape of the workers. In general, the results show that ants of urban areas...
